Upma Recipe: Easy and Delicious Breakfast Idea


Start your day on a delicious note with Upma, a traditional South Indian breakfast dish made from semolina (sooji) and an array of flavorful spices and vegetables. This hearty and satisfying dish offers a perfect balance of textures and flavours, with the semolina absorbing the aromatic spices and the vegetables adding a burst of freshness.

Ingredients

  • Rava (semolina) 1 cup
  • Ghee 1tbsp + oil 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • Urad dal 1 tsp
  • Green chillies 1-2 nos. (chopped)
  • Ginger 1 inch (chopped)
  • Cashew nuts 2 tbsp (broken)
  • Curry leaves 12-15 nos.
  • Onion 1 medium size (chopped)
  • Water 3.25 cups
  • Sugar 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Lemon juice 1 tsp
  • Fresh coriander leaves 1 tbsp


Method

  • Set a pan on medium heat and add rava, dry roast the rava until the colour changes slightly and the aroma releases.
  • Set a wok on medium heat, add ghee and oil, add mustard seeds, urad dal and chana dal and sautĂ© for a few seconds.
  • Add green chillies, ginger, cashew nuts, curry leaves and onions, and sautĂ© until onions are translucent.
  • Add water, sugar and salt, mix well and bring to a simmer, cover it with a lid to fasten the process of boiling.
  • Add the roasted rava slowly and gradually while stirring continuously, mix well to ensure there are no lumps. Keep stirring continuously on medium flame until the water is absorbed completely.
  • Add ghee, mix well and cook until rava leaves the sides of the pan, switch off the flame and cover it for 3-4 minutes.
  • Finish it by adding lemon juice and freshly chopped coriander leaves, mix well and serve hot, it tastes even better with coconut chutney.
